Jeez Madeline, I have a lot of respect for what you have done in the past, but I don't have a lot of time for your utter dismissal of Williams here. In taking apart Guy's "journalism" here, maybe reflect on your own. People are asking (as per the comments above) "what the hell am I getting out of so-called reporting more than just regurgitating what these clowns are saying?" There's no depth, no insight and the research is handed to you on an unbalanced plate. I feel like Guy's questions have come from a place of frustration, as it has from an awful lot of the public in seeking a straight answer. If Seymour is such a tough nut to crack, then do the fucking mahi and take to him with a decent hammer, instead of taking the piss out of someone who's out of his depth. I've been a financial contributor to The Spinoff for an awfully long time, even before your cap-in-hand requests of late. Even during times when it has been a stretch to afford it, when I have been out of work. I'm seriously considering if it's worth it any more, as you seem to have slipped into the lazy pattern of other media. And this just feels a bit like punching down as well.

Kia ora 😊. I watched the interaction and from where I was sitting, Guy hit the target. He openly called out Seymour’s pattern of lying. He riled Seymour in a way I haven’t seen a journalist do. A riled and angry Seymour is who that man is and we deserve to see so that we can make accurate judgements of him. So far media coverage has simply amplified his messaging. Guy cut right through that and I, for one, have really appreciated it.

Yup, I appreciated it too, I've not seen *anybody* except Madeline thinking that David came out of it looking like the winning, and I'm sure as hell not going to take the youtube comment section of the act party's channel as indicative of anything other than the fact that Act supporters are idiotic, racist sycophants.

Hey Madeline, maybe if there wasn't still absolute radio silence from the media about the former Young Act vice president's allegations that David Seymour absolutely knew about Tim Jago's abusive nature because the media wanted to cover his engagement announcement instead of his coverup of child rape, you guys wouldn't have to keep begging for money

🤔😱Usually agree with much of what you say BUT completely disagree about journalism, media, & Guy Williams at Waitangi - I think being an "insider" distorts what "the public" perception is ⁉️ Frankly falling into the trap of picking a "winner" (Seymour) & a "loser" (Williams) is precisely what ticks me off about media treatment of blatant media hogs like Seymour (& Trump 🤮)

Good on Guy Williams I say 👏 "Real" Journalists don't need to be rude or aggressive in their jobs to challenge blatant liars like Seymour but they do need to stop quote-repeating his lies or airing clips of his lies - unless it is a comprehensive rebuttal piece. I'd rather read/hear "Seymour incorrectly quoted statistics from.... about...." rather than quoting him verbatim - these days supporters will clip the segment & share it as true. If we can't trust politicians at press conferences to tell the truth because journalists can't manage to challenge them on the spot, it confirms why I don't watch them anymore 😱🤷 Seymour et al know they can stand up & say what they want, truth-lies-fairytales etc at a "press standup" & who except those of us already informed & engaged knows the difference? 🤷

Yes less journalists & harder these days, but chicken & egg ⁉️ I pay subs to people who speak the truth regardless of politics etc & note those who don't & don't believe them without corroboration 🤷

i am so tired of journalists acting as stenographers instead of reporters.

Had a wee chat over on Bluesky and there seems to be a lot of disagreement with your take but then again it appears to be armchair criticism. I’m not a journalist either, by the way. So, the thought is, why don’t political journalists do what Guy did? Admittedly, his manner was quite clumsy, but it appears to have really hit a nerve. On many occasions, it feels as if publications just print political party press releases without any scrutiny so their message gets out there then people say, “Hang on a minute”, but by then the proverbial horse has bolted. It often appears that Seymour gets his message across without impunity, which frustrates many.

Where’s the mongrel?
